La Bibliothèque de Trowbridge
(Wiltshire,Royaume Uni, plus de 30 000 habitants))
TROWBRIDGE LIBRARY
Elle est située dans l’espace du County Council ( conseil de Région) : il y a un parking gratuit pour 2 heures (enregistrement à la réception)

Lorsqu’on entre dans cet espace, on
découvre une vaste salle couverte d’un plafond translucide, comme un patio mexicain dans les bâtiments construits autour d’une
cour intérieure (ex : la bibliothèque de Oaxaca, les bâtiments administratifs tels que les Palacio Municipal à Queretaro
etc) c’est superbe! (ici, au lieu de rechercher un espace climatisé, les
profiteurs que nous sommes bénéficient d’un endroit CHAUFFE!)
Il y a une cafeteria, les gens sont assis,
boivent un café, discutent, travaillent seuls ou à plusieurs. Nous, on étudie
le plan de la ville pour savoir ce qu’on va visiter ensuite…
L’entrée de la médiathèque est sur la
gauche, et présente un espace ouvert avec plusieurs “coins” dédiés à des activités diverses :
ici, c’est l’espace multimedia avec les ordinateurs, là c’est le bureau
d’accueil, plus loin le coin des enfants : lecture, contes, jeux, c’est quelquefois bruyant, parait-il…
Plus loin, on peut voír un groupe de dames faisant
l’alphabétisation à l'aide d'albums pour enfants : on a envie de
passer la journée ici!
Les ouvrages sont rangés sur des rayonnages
entièrement sur roulettes, ce qui fait qu’on peut moduler l’espace : ça fait
rêver, nous qui sommes dans un local devenu exigu…( promis je fais un artcle
sur NOTRE bibliothèque dès que possible!)

Je n’ai pas eu le temps de regarder le
fonds, mais il a l’air très bien fourni…(fiction, “non fiction”, documentaires
, enfants, ados etc…)
Ce qui m’a surpris ce sont les machines
pour retourner ou emprunter des ouvrages:il est à craindre que cela en vienne à
réduire le personnel: et le contact humain dans tout ça?

Ceci dit il y a des personnes à l’accueil
et je dois dire qu’elles sont très aimables : à Trowbridge, la bibliothécaire
parlait un français parfait : il aurait fallu qu’on ait plus de temps pour
l’inviter à bavarder autour d’un café…
En allant à la médiathèque de Bath, à une dizaine de
kilomètres, on a rencontré la même disposition (open space) avec les
rayonnages à roulettes et les machines.
Ces deux bibliothèques britanniques, à la
pointe du modernisme, ainsi que cet espace convivial où les gens se retrouvent
(à Bath, c’est un centre commercial, pas de photo) nous donnent envie d’y
revenir : Why not ?

It is located in the building of the County
Council.
Trowbridge : more than 30,000 inhabitants
When we enter this space, we discover a
large patio covered with a translucent roof like a patio in a mexican
building built around an open space (for example :the library in Oaxaca, some
administrative buildings in Mexico city or Queretaro, palacio municipal in evry city, etc) : it’s wonderful!
(here , instead of looking for air conditionning, the "profiteers" we are benefit from a HEATED space!)
There is a cafeteria, people sit there
enjoying a cup of coffee, chatting or working alone or in teams.As for us, we study the city
plan to see what to visit next.
The entrance to the library is on the left
and shows an open space layout with several “corners” dedicated to
diverse activities : here one can see the multimedia corner with computers,
there the help desk, further on the children’s place : reading,story-telling, games : it can be
noisy occasionnally I have been told…
A little further on, there is a group of
ladies teaching English to foreigners with
children’s albums:

The shelves loaded with books are ON
WHEELS so the librarians can alter the
layout at any time : it makes us dream, WE have a cramped space now… (I promise
I write an article about OUR library very soon!!)
I did not have time to look at all the
books on display but it looks as if there is a huge choice (fiction, non fiction, documentaries,
children’s literature, teenagers’ etc..;)
What surprised me was the machines to
return or borrow books : what about the personnel who could become redundant,
and social contact?
That said, there are people at the help
desk who are very nice : in Trowbridge, the lady there spoke a perfect French : we would have liked to have more time to chat with her
over a cup of coffee…
When we went to Bath library (no photo), at about 10
kilometres from there, we saw the same layout (open space) with the shelves on
wheels and the machines.
Those two British libraries, at the forefront of modernism and that congenial space where people can meet (in Bath, it is a
shopping mall in the centre of the city) make us feel like coming back : why
not?
